Hi avid (and rabid) readers,There is much for the roving scribe to address this week re the Folk and Acoustic club. The good news is that genuine folk music activities(fancy that) are rearing their delicate heads-firstly Michelle Goven is about to establish a very low cost session aimed at teaching folk to play by ear in the time honoured traditional way utilizing traditional Celtic melodies. (see her Folk friend's News article) All instruments are welcome, and if you are a relative beginner or not used to playing with a group this is an ideal opportunity to have fun ,meet people,be nice to Michelle etc –remember many of the finest traditional musicians have learned their craft via this approach and cannot read (or even need )formal music . Michelle is of course is a very experienced musician, teacher, high class fiddler, and a potential major contributor to the snippet retirement fund.(Hence this ad) One a similar subject the Irish contingent are also starting up Jam sessions at the Great Northern Hotel on Saturday nights-this is another chance to play along in a traditional session as well as meeting smiling Irish folk and even leprechauns –sounds like a good night.(see their Folk Friends News article) Gee can we cope with all this activity !—where’s my barong? -viva la folk tradition. The club nights have recommenced and people have become aware of an unintended looming clash with the TAMPAS music –jam session at the lifesavers club-I’m assured that discussions are afoot to try and sort this out(-looks like a genuine case of WOOPS.) The next committee meeting is currently set for the first Saturday of the next month –February 6---10am Bellevue Hotel-although judging from the massive flying round of variably informed Emails currently circulating, may be required sooner to keep all in touch- watch this cranial void. Cheers, Roger |
