The STEP OUT – STEP UP program is administered by the North Queensland Jazz Club Inc. and is a unique program designed to train and mentor the next cohort of Townsville Jazz musicians and singers. Leading Townsville Jazz musicians will mentor and train 10 chosen applicants in the art of singing and playing jazz. As well as attending workshops in improvisation and stagecraft the participants in the program will obtain valuable playing experience by sitting in with local jazz bands at professional performances. The concept is to assist musicians and singers to Step OUT of the school systems or the non-professional playing arena and have them Step UP to playing in front of fee-paying audiences. There is a world of difference between playing with school bands or non-professional groups and the nuances of performing with professionals. The program will entail personal mentoring of the participants over a period of nine months. The number of competent professional jazz players in Townsville is small and the program is designed to increase the jazz playing personnel of Townsville. Step OUT – Step UP will culminate in a special jazz night at the NQ Jazz Club on 22 November 2009 when the program participants will play and sing as ___________________ (name to be developed during program) – a newly developed jazz band with its own unique sound. Applications are accepted from musicians and singers from 15 years to 35 years of age. Closing date for applications is Monday 23 February 2009. Auditions for successful applicants will be held on Saturday 28 February 2009, venue to be advised. Each applicant selected for audition will be required to perform one item, preferably a jazz tune. An accompanist will be provided by the Step OUT – Step Up mentors. Jazz at the PCYC - this Sunday 22/2/09 Come and enjoy NQ Jazz Club, with Townsville's most experienced jazz band - Pacific Mainstream Jazz Band returning for the first time in 2009. Led by Les Nicholson on trumpet, PMJB has been performing together for 35 years! There is always a sit-in bracket for visiting musicians and dancers are encouraged as there is a great dance floor.
